Substance use disorder is a condition that occurs when people consume alcohol, drugs, or nicotine in an uncontrollable way despite knowing that harmful consequences may happen. People often spend significant amounts of time focusing on and/or using the substance to the extent that their day-to-day lives become very problematic. People with this condition often have difficulty with their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and/or behavior. Changes in the brain occur with frequent use that can cause people to have strong cravings, personality changes, and abnormal movements to name a few. The most severe substance use disorders are sometimes referred to as addictions
